The Original Mr Brainch
Born 21st March 1934 to Gurdev Singh and Kundan Kaur, Ajit Singh spent his early childhood in his Mothers village of Dhada Kalan, Punjab. Here he attended Dhada Kalan Primary School and then later, Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa High School and College, Mahilpur. This was the only institution within 7 miles and despite Ajit's Farther insisting he take up the family tradition of farming, Ajit decided to walk a 14 mile round trip in order to attend school.
Ajit came from a poor upbringing, the extent of which meant his family were unable to buy shoes for him to walk to school in. However, bare-foot and determined, Ajit graduated High school and went on to College, from which he graduated in 1952. Ajit began teacher training at Punjab University after graduating from college, training in Punjabi, Persian, English, Political Science, Economics, History, Geography and Mathematics. He graduated from Pubjab University in 1954, after which, he joined Rajput High School, Hoshiarpur, to teach Language and Politics for 3 years.
After 3 years of teaching, Ajit decided he wanted to help others on their path to becoming educators, and so applied to Punjab University in 1957 to study Psychology, Methods of Teaching, School Organisation and Agriculture. Upon graduating in 1958, Ajit paused his career in teaching in order to provide vital assistance at home to his family but, returned to Rajput High School in 1960 as a deputy head and trainee teacher mentor. Here, Ajit was finally able to fulfil his goal of aiding others in becoming better educators, whilst still teaching Psychology, English, History and Geography. In 1962, Ajit joined the Government Middle School, Hoshiarpur, as Head Teacher, teaching English, Agriculture and Social Science.
In 1964, Ajit applied to come to England, and moved to Wolverhampton. But, despite his credentials and desire to work in education, the only job opportunity available for Ajit was at Goodyear Tyre Factory, Wolverhampton. Unfortunately in order to work there, Ajit had to remove his turban and beard, which weighed heavily on his heart and mind for 21 years.
In 1980, Ajit volunteered to teach GCSE Punjabi on the weekends at Bingly Junior School, Wolverhampton, and when in the 1980's the UK government eased the policy on turbans and beards in workplaces, Ajit began keeping his hair, wearing a turban and became a Baptised Sikh. In 1988, Ajit moved his voluntary service of teaching GCSE Punjabi at Bingly Junior School to the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, Wolverhampton. In 1999, Ajit retired from Goodyear, but continued his services to the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara as a GCSE and A-Level Punjabi teacher.
Ajit withdrew these services in 2019 as his health has become his priority and to this day, Ajit Singh Brainch lives in Wolverhampton with two generations of teachers under him.
